September is one of the best months in Delaware – great weather, the fall colors begin, and it is an excellent month to be outside. 

Here’s some great free events to enjoy with your family in September! 

New Castle 

Arden Fair

Date: Saturday, September 1, 2018 

Time: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Rain or Shine

Location: Town of Arden (visit their website for maps, directions, and information on shuttle buses)

Visit the 111th Arden Fair and find over handmade crafts and jewelry from over 120 vendors, art exhibits, music, and all of this for free admission. 

Folklore Fridays: Stories from The Civil War

Date: Friday, September 14, 2018

Time: 8:00 p.m.– 9:00 p.m.

Location: Greenbank Mills & Philips Farm 500 Greenbank Rd Wilmington, DE 19808

Gather around the bonfire with us, and be transported back in time through stories of local folklore and history by our gifted storytellers. Each community, each state, are threads in the fabric that make up the history and legacy of our great nation; each Friday a different storyteller will illuminate a thread of our past around the bonfire, bringing the past to life with stories of folklore and history.

Peace Week Delaware and Fall Equinox Labyrinth Walk 

Date: September 22, 2018 

Time: 6:00 p.m.– 7:00 p.m.

Participate in Peace Week Delaware with a walk in the Delaware Art Museum Labyrinth in the Anthony N. Fusco Reservoir. Peace Week raises awareness and hope for peace in our communities, nation, and world. 

Korean Festival 

Date: September 29, 2018

Time: 11:00 a.m.– 3:00 p.m.

Location: 2301 Kentmere Parkway Wilmington, DE 19806

Immerse yourself in traditional and modern Korean culture through art, music, dance, and food. Enjoy Korean-inspired art activities, a photo booth, Korean snack sampling, TaeKwonDo demonstrations, hands-on activities, and much more. 

Townsend Town Fair

Date: September 22nd, 2018 

Time: All Day Starting at 10 a.m. 

Location: Townsend Municipal Park

The 13th Annual Townsend Fair will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2018. The fair begins with a parade from the Townsend Fire Station on Main Street at 10 am.  The parade proceeds down Main Street to the Municipal Park where the fair will be held from 11 to 3 with inflatables, carnival games, contests, face painting, lots of good food and  about 100 vendors set up in the park, providing a fun-filled day from start to finish.  

St. Hedwig Polish Festival

Date: September 24-29, 2018  

Time: All Day

Location: Wilmington Riverfront

The St. Hedwig Polish Festival in Wilmington, Delaware will feature authentic food, music & dancing, rides and family fun.

Brandywine Festival of the Arts

Date: September 8, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and September 9, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Location: Brandywine Park’s Josephine Gardens

The Brandywine Festival of the Arts is an annual arts festival in Wilmington, Delaware. Featuring hundreds of juried artists exhibiting one-of-a-kind art, the festival is a Delaware tradition spanning over half a century. 

Wilmington Art Loop

Date: September 7th, 2018

Time:5:00 p.m.

Location: Various locations in Wilmington

The free, self-guided public art event, Art Loop Wilmington, brings together art lovers and community to the ever-evolving downtown and greater Wilmington areas. Art galleries, studios, museums and alternative art spaces offer an opportunity to meet the featured artist(s) while enjoying refreshments, and in some cases live entertainment.

Stories of the Green Walking

Time: Every hour, lasting approximately 45 minutes

Location: John Bell House on The Green

Free tours led by historical interpreters in period dress. The tour begins at the John Bell House on The Green every hour and last approximately 45 minutes. For dates check out the website.

First Saturday’s First People of the First State

Date: Saturday September 1, 2018

Time: All day starting at 9 a.m.

Join the Heritage Park for the monthly First Saturday in the First State program. This Saturday’s program is First People of the First State 

Milford’s Annual Riverwalk Freedom Festival 

Date: Saturday, Sep 8, 2018

Time: 9 a.m. and will conclude with Milford’s only fireworks display

Location: Walnut Street to BiCentennial Park.

Milford’s largest annual outdoor festival, the Riverwalk Freedom Festival, is hosted by the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Milford to celebrate the anniversary of September 11, 2001. What originally started out to be a one-day event has evolved into a fun-filled, event spanning the entire downtown Milford area from Walnut Street to BiCentennial Park.

OktDoverFest 2018 

Date: Saturday, September 22, 2018

Time:  3 p.m.- 9 p.m.

Location: Loockerman Street

This event celebrates Dover’s thriving small businesses, our military community, craft beverage industry, and new manufacturing partners. OktDoverFest is Dover’s spin on the traditional German rite of passage and features activities for all ages. The festivities begin at 3 p.m. and will conclude at 9 pm. Loockerman Street will be closed between State Street and Governors Avenue to allow our participants to roam the retail district of Downtown Dover. 

The Ladybug Festival 

Date: Saturday, September 22, 2018

Time: All day 

Location:  Downtown Milford

The Ladybug Festival to Milford, Delaware, on Saturday, September 22nd. There is a planned rain date of Sunday, September 23rd. The massive block party, which will be completely free to attend thanks to sponsors, will have an outdoor main stage in Downtown Milford and multiple smaller venues in local store fronts, bringing foot traffic inside Downtown Milford businesses.

The Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral

Time: 5:30 p.m.- 7:00 p.m.

Location: North end of the Bethany Beach Boardwalk

The Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral is celebrated each Labor Day Monday beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the North end of the Bethany Beach Boardwalk. This “quirky” Jazz Funeral tradition is family-friendly, free to the public, and you can even dress in costume for the occasion.

40th Annual Sandcastle Contest

Date: Saturday, September 8, 2018 

Time: All day, starting at 11 a.m.

Location: The beach off of Rehoboth Ave

Teams and individuals can express their artistic flair in the sand. Past creations have included sea creatures, Funland rides, movie characters, pyramids and traditional sandcastles. Fun for both participants and spectators! Public can vote for their favorite sculptures, help build a community sandcastle and create a kid’s sand art craft activity.
